How does Kontuly back up my books?

Applies to Kontuly 0.2 beta Updated

Kontuly backs up every business automatically each day you use it and keeps the newest 14. It also takes a backup before an update changes how data is stored and before a business is deleted, and you can take one yourself at any time with Back up now in Settings → Backups.

  1. Open Settings and scroll to Backups.
  2. Click Back up now before a big change, such as a bulk bank import, voiding a lot of transactions, or a conversion. You'll see Backup saved.

Manual backups are never deleted automatically.

What's in the backups list?

The backups of the business that's open, newest first, with the date and time, the size, a Restore as new business button and the kind:

  • Daily: taken about a minute after Kontuly starts, and periodically while it's open, for each business that hasn't had one in the last day or so. The newest 14 are kept.
  • Manual: from Back up now, or taken automatically just before a conversion import.
  • Before update: taken before an update changes how data is stored.
  • Before delete: the final backup taken when a business is deleted.

If the list says "No backups yet", the first daily backup is taken a minute after the app starts. Show backups folder opens the folder on your computer.

Is that enough?

No. These backups are on the same computer as your books. They protect you from mistakes and from a problem with one file, but not from losing or replacing the computer. Set up off-site copies too, so a copy goes to a USB drive or network drive every day.

Do backups include attachments?

Yes. Receipts and other files you attach are kept inside your books, so every backup includes them.
