How do I restore a Kontuly backup?

Applies to Kontuly 0.2 beta Updated

In Kontuly, open Settings → Backups and click Restore as new business next to a listed backup, or Restore from file… to choose a .kontuly file. Restoring always adds the backup as a new, separate business, so the books you have are never overwritten.

  1. Open Settings and scroll to Backups.
  2. Choose what to restore.
    • A backup in the list: click Restore as new business next to it.
    • A file you exported, or an off-site copy: click Restore from file… and choose the .kontuly file.
  3. Enter the backup password if the file is protected.
  4. Check the restored business. Kontuly switches to it and confirms "Your original business is unchanged."

On a new computer with no business set up yet, click Restore from a backup file… on the start screen instead.

What is the restored business called?

The business's legal name. If you already have a business with that name, "(restored …)" and the date are added, so you can tell them apart. You can rename it.

Why are reminders off in the restored business?

So two copies of your books never email the same customer, a restored business starts with overdue reminders switched off and recurring templates paused. If it's now the one you work in, tick Send overdue reminders in Settings and resume the templates in Recurring.

Which copy do I keep?

Pick one and work only in it: anything you enter in one doesn't appear in the other. Then delete the copy you don't need. See I restored a backup and now I have two businesses.

Why won't the file restore?

  • "That file is not a Kontuly backup": choose a .kontuly file.
  • "The backup file is damaged and cannot be restored": try another backup or off-site copy.
  • "This backup is from a newer version of the app — update to restore it": update Kontuly first.
  • A password message: the backup was protected with a backup password. Without it, the file can't be opened.

Your licence also has to allow another business; see Why is one of my businesses read-only?
