How do I password-protect my Kontuly backups?

Applies to Kontuly 0.2 beta Updated

In Kontuly, open Settings → Security and click Set a password… under Backup password. From then on, every off-site copy and every exported backup is encrypted (AES-256), so someone who finds a lost USB drive can't open your books.

  1. Open Settings and scroll to Security.
  2. Click Set a password… under Backup password.
  3. Type the password twice.
  4. Click Save.

Kontuly doesn't ask for the password each time it makes a copy. An export confirms "Backup exported, protected with your backup password".

How do I restore a protected backup?

Use Restore from file… in Settings → Backups and enter the backup password when asked, on this computer or any other. On the computer that made them, its own off-site copies open straight away. See How do I restore a Kontuly backup?

Are the daily backups encrypted?

No. The daily backups kept on your computer itself aren't affected; your computer's disk encryption protects those. See Is Kontuly secure?

What if I change or remove the password?

Changing it protects later backups with the new password. Backups already made keep the password they were made with, so keep a note of the old one while you still have those copies. Removing it means later backups aren't protected.

I forgot the backup password

Without it, a protected backup can't be opened by anyone, not even us. Keep the password somewhere other than this computer, for example written down at home, so you still have it if the computer is lost.
