How do I enter opening stock or a stocktake in Kontuly?

Applies to Kontuly 0.2 beta Updated

In Kontuly, click the boxes icon (Stock) on a tracked item's row in Items, enter the change in quantity and the other account, and click Post adjustment. Use it for opening stock, a stocktake difference, or damaged goods written off.

  1. Open the item's stock. In Items, click the boxes icon (Stock) on the item's row. You'll see every movement of its stock.
  2. Enter the Date and the Change in quantity. 12 adds 12; -2 removes 2.
  3. Enter the Cost per unit (excl. tax) when adding stock.
  4. Choose the Other account. For opening stock, an opening-balance or owner's equity account. For a stocktake loss or damaged goods, your cost of sales account or a stock-loss expense.
  5. Add a note, such as Opening stock or Stocktake 30 June.
  6. Click Post adjustment.

Stock you add comes in at the cost you give. Stock you remove leaves at the average cost. Each adjustment posts a Stock adjustment journal, which you can void from Journals if you got it wrong.

If you use tracking categories, you can choose the Tracking for the other account, for example the job a write-off belongs to.

Why can't I sell an item I have in stock?

Kontuly only knows about stock that came in through a bill or an adjustment. If you're starting out with stock already on the shelf, enter it as opening stock first. The message says how many are on hand and how many the invoice needs.

How do I stop tracking an item?

Adjust its stock to zero first, then untick Track stock on hand.

Why can't I put stock on a journal or bank line?

Stock only moves through bills, invoices, credit notes and stock adjustments. That keeps the Inventory account equal to the value of the stock you hold. See How do I track stock in Kontuly?
