How do I hold a bank account in another currency in Kontuly?

Applies to Kontuly 0.2 beta Updated

In Kontuly, create a bank account in the Chart of Accounts and enter its Currency of the account, for example USD, before it has any transactions. Its statement lines and balance are then kept in that currency, and each line is recorded in your books in Australian dollars at the rate for its date.

  1. Open Chart of Accounts and click New account.
  2. Fill in the code, name and type, and tick This is a bank / cash account.
  3. Enter the Currency of the account. It can't change once the account has transactions.
  4. Click Create.

Day to day

  • Import statements as usual; lines and balances are in the account's currency.
  • Coding a line records it at the rate on file for its date.
  • Match money in or out to an invoice or bill in the same currency.
  • Reconcile the account in its own currency.

A bank line in Australian dollars can also pay a foreign invoice or bill in full: match it, and the line's amount is taken as what you received or paid.

Converting between currencies

For a transfer between accounts in different currencies, such as AUD to USD, use Transfer and pair the line with the other account's line once that statement is imported: the two amounts give the rate. If the other statement isn't in yet, enter the amount on the other account yourself. See How do I record a transfer between my own bank accounts?

Unrealised gains and losses

The Unrealised Currency Gains report shows what your foreign balances and open documents would gain or lose at a date's rate. See How do I post a currency revaluation?

Batch bill payments by ABA file are for Australian dollar accounts only.
