How do I record paying the ATO for my BAS in Kontuly?

Applies to Kontuly 0.2 beta Updated

In Kontuly's Banking screen, code the bank line for your BAS payment (or refund) to your GST account, with No GST. A payment to the ATO isn't GST on a sale or purchase, so it never appears on your next BAS; if it includes PAYG withheld or an instalment, split it.

  1. Export the GST Report as a PDF for the period, for your records.
  2. Find the ATO payment in Banking once it's imported.
  3. Click Split if the payment covers more than GST. Give each part its own line, all with No GST:
    • the GST share to your GST account, such as GST Control Account, GST Payable (Collected) or GST Receivable (Input Credits), whichever your accountant prefers;
    • the PAYG withheld share to PAYG Withholding Payable;
    • an instalment to your income tax account.
  4. Code it to the GST account if the payment is GST only.
  5. Lock the period. Set the lock date to the last day of the BAS period, so nothing in it changes by accident. See How do I lock a period?

Will this affect W2?

No. Paying the ATO debits the withholding account; W2 only counts amounts credited to it, so the payment isn't counted.

A refund from the ATO

Code the money in to the same GST account. Refunds from the ATO aren't counted on the GST Report either.

Do I need to clear the GST accounts?

Not for the BAS: payments and clearing journals never reach the GST figures. If your accountant asks you to move balances between GST Payable and GST Receivable, use a manual journal; it won't change your BAS.

Which account to use for income tax and how to treat the GST balances is a question for your accountant or registered BAS agent.
