Does Kontuly connect to my bank with bank feeds?

Applies to Kontuly 0.2 beta Updated

No. Kontuly doesn't connect to your bank: you download a CSV or PDF statement from your internet banking and import it into Kontuly's Banking screen. Duplicates are skipped, so you can import as often as you like.

How does this work day to day?

Most people import once a week or once a month:

  • Download the statement for the dates since your last import (overlap is fine; lines Kontuly already has are skipped). See How do I import a bank statement CSV?
  • Bank rules code regular items such as rent, phone bills and bank fees as they come in.
  • You code or match what's left, then reconcile to the statement.

A business with a few hundred transactions a month can usually do this in a few minutes once its rules are set up.

Why no bank feeds?

Kontuly keeps your books on your own computer. A bank feed means a third party holding access to your bank account; a statement file is something you download and hand over yourself. See Your data and privacy.

What formats work?

  • CSV from almost any Australian bank. This is the most reliable.
  • PDF statements, read best-effort with a review screen before import. See Can Kontuly import a PDF bank statement?
  • Typed in: for a cash tin or an account with no export, use Quick Input.

Credit cards, savings accounts, PayPal or Stripe balances and petty cash can all be bank accounts in Kontuly, each with its own statements. See How do I add a credit card or another bank account?
