Can Kontuly import a PDF bank statement?

Applies to Kontuly 0.2 beta Updated

Yes. In Kontuly's Banking screen, click PDF and choose the statement (up to 25 MB); Kontuly reads the transactions it can find and shows them in a review window before anything is imported. Reading a PDF is best-effort, so check every row, and use a CSV file if your bank offers one.

  1. Choose the bank account. Select it in the Bank account list in Banking.
  2. Click PDF and choose the statement. The Review imported statement window lists every transaction Kontuly found.
  3. Check every row against the statement. You can change the Date, Description, Amount and direction (Dir: In or Out) of any row.
  4. Untick rows that aren't transactions. Opening balances, totals and interest summaries should be unticked. Rows with no readable date start unticked.
  5. Click Import N transactions.

What should I check most carefully?

The direction of each amount. A deposit read as a withdrawal puts your books out by twice the amount. Compare the list with the statement before you import.

Does Kontuly keep the running balance from a PDF?

If the statement prints a running balance on each line and Kontuly can read it, it's kept with each transaction, just as a CSV Balance column is. The statement balance then shows on the Banking screen and reconciliation suggests the closing balance. A statement without running balances imports the transactions only.

"No transactions detected in this PDF"

The statement is probably a scanned image rather than text, which Kontuly can't read. Ask your bank for a CSV file, or type the transactions in with Quick Input.

What else can go wrong?

  • A PDF over 25 MB is refused: "That PDF is too large to import (25 MB limit)".
  • A very long PDF can stop with "Reading the PDF took too long". Download a shorter date range, or a CSV.

If the imported lines look wrong, see Transactions from a PDF statement look wrong.
