How do I import a bank statement CSV into Kontuly?

Applies to Kontuly 0.2 beta Updated

In Kontuly, open Banking, choose the account in the Bank account list, click CSV and pick the statement file you downloaded from your internet banking. Check the column roles in the preview, then click Import N transactions.

  1. Download a CSV from your bank. Most banks offer it as "CSV", "Excel (CSV)" or "spreadsheet" in their export options.
  2. Choose the bank account. In Banking, select it in the Bank account list. Transactions go into whichever account is selected, so check this first.
  3. Click CSV and choose the file. The Import statement window opens with Kontuly's guess of what each column holds.
  4. Check the column roles. You need a Date, either Amount (signed) or a Debit (out) and Credit (in) pair, and ideally a Description. Map a Balance column if your file has one. Set anything else to Ignore.
  5. Check First row is a header and Date format. Australian banks use Day/Month/Year. Look at a few dates early in the month in the preview.
  6. Click Import N transactions. The summary shows how many were imported, how many duplicates were skipped and how many your bank rules coded.

Why is CSV the best format?

CSV files are read exactly, so there's nothing to guess. Amounts written as $1,234.56, -12.50, 12.50-, (12.50) or 12.50 CR / 12.50 DR are all understood, and so are dates with month names, such as 15 Jul 2026.

Mapping the Balance column is optional but worth it: Kontuly then shows your statement balance on the Banking screen and suggests the closing balance when you reconcile.

Can I import the same statement twice?

Yes. Kontuly skips any line it already has in that bank account with the same date, amount and description, so overlapping files are safe. See Why does Kontuly say duplicates were skipped?

What next?

The imported lines wait in the review list for you to code them. Set up bank rules and regular items such as rent and bank fees are coded as they arrive.
