Why do my Kontuly invoice notes show {{customer_name}}?

Applies to Kontuly 0.2 beta Updated

That's expected: in Kontuly's invoice editor, variables in the notes such as {{customer_name}} or {{due_date}} stay as written, and are filled in when the invoice is previewed, printed or emailed, once the customer, number and totals are final. Click Preview to see the notes as your customer will.

Why does a variable come out blank?

  • It's misspelt. Type it exactly, with both pairs of curly brackets. A variable Kontuly doesn't recognise is replaced with nothing.
  • It's in your default invoice notes in Settings. There, only {{terms}}, {{business_name}}, {{business_email}}, {{business_phone}} and {{business_abn}} are filled in, because the default notes are written before a customer is chosen. Use customer and invoice variables in the email templates instead.
  • The contact has no first name. {{customer_first_name}} comes out blank, so an email starts "Hi ,". Fill in First name on your contacts, or use {{customer_name}}.

Which variables are there?

Customer: {{customer_first_name}}, {{customer_last_name}}, {{customer_name}}, {{customer_email}}. Invoice: {{invoice_number}}, {{invoice_total}}, {{invoice_subtotal}}, {{invoice_gst}}, {{amount_due}}, {{issue_date}}, {{due_date}}. Yours: {{terms}}, {{business_name}}, {{business_email}}, {{business_phone}}, {{business_abn}}.

Dates come out in year-month-day form, for example 2026-10-28. See How do I set up email in Kontuly? to change the invoice email's wording.
