How do I run a Trial Balance or General Ledger in Kontuly?

Applies to Kontuly 0.2 beta Updated

In Kontuly, open Trial Balance or General Ledger from All reports under Ledger. The Trial Balance lists every account with a balance at a date in Debit and Credit columns; the General Ledger lists every transaction, account by account, for a period.

Trial Balance

  1. Open Trial Balance and set As at.
  2. Check the totals. Debits must equal credits; that's the basic proof the books balance, and the check at the bottom.
  3. Click an account to see its transactions in the General Ledger.

Accountants use the Trial Balance as the starting point for year-end work and tax returns. Its income and expense balances are for all time up to the as-at date, not reset each year; the Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet split them by financial year.

General Ledger

  1. Open General Ledger and choose the Period, or From and To.
  2. Choose an Account to see just one (start typing to search), or click All.
  3. Read each entry: Date, Source (Journal, Invoice, Bill, Bank or Reversal, with any reference), Description, Debit, Credit and a running Balance, between the Opening balance and Closing balance.

Balances are shown in each account's normal direction, so a positive balance on an income account means income earned. Voided journals and their reversals both appear; together they cancel out. The General Ledger prints in landscape.

Clicking through from other reports

Any underlined account name on another report opens the General Ledger for that account. Your choices are remembered when you go back.
