How do I set a budget and compare it with actuals in Kontuly?

Applies to Kontuly 0.2 beta Updated

In Kontuly, open Budgets from the sidebar, click New budget, add the income and expense accounts you want (or click Start from last year), type an amount for each month and click Save. The Budget vs Actual report then compares it with your books; a budget never posts anything.

  1. Click New budget. Give it a Name and choose the First month (it starts at your financial year).
  2. Add accounts with Add an account…, or click Start from last year to fill the grid with each account's actual figures for the previous twelve months.
  3. Type an amount for each month. To spread a year evenly, type the total in the Year column and press Enter: each month gets a twelfth.
  4. Click Save.

Amounts are positive for both income and expenses. The bottom row shows the budgeted Net profit for each month and the year.

Compare with actuals

Click Budget vs Actual on the Budgets screen, or open it from All reports under Financial statements. Choose the Budget and the period. Each account shows its Actual, Budget, Variance (actual less budget) and Var. %, grouped and totalled like the Profit and Loss, down to net profit. Click an account to see its transactions.

Good to know

  • When the period covers part of a month, that month's budget counts by its share of days.
  • Months outside the budget's twelve count nothing.
  • You can keep several budgets, for example an original and a revised one.
  • An account a budget uses is archived rather than deleted.
