Why do transactions from a PDF statement look wrong in Kontuly?

Applies to Kontuly 0.2 beta Updated

Kontuly reads PDF bank statements on a best-effort basis, because every bank lays them out differently. That's why it always shows a review window first: check every row, especially the amount and the in/out direction, and if your bank's PDF doesn't read well, download a CSV statement instead.

Checks in order

  1. Direction. Each row has a Dir of In or Out. A deposit read as a withdrawal is the most costly mistake. Fix it in the review window.
  2. Amounts and dates. Change any misread Amount or Date before importing.
  3. Rows that aren't transactions. Untick opening balances, totals and interest summaries.

I've already imported it

Unassign any wrong lines that were coded, then delete them from Banking (bin icon) and either import again or add the right lines with Add transaction.

The statement balance doesn't appear

Kontuly keeps the running balance when it can read one on each line. If the Banking statement balance or the reconciliation's suggested closing balance doesn't appear, it couldn't read balances from that statement. Type the closing balance yourself when you reconcile.

Error messages

  • "No transactions detected in this PDF": probably a scanned image. Use a CSV, or type the lines in with Quick Input.
  • "That PDF is too large to import (25 MB limit)".
  • "Reading the PDF took too long": try a shorter statement period.
