Does Kontuly run on Mac, Windows and Linux? How do I install it?

Applies to Kontuly 0.2 beta Updated

Kontuly runs on macOS (Apple silicon and Intel), 64-bit Windows and Linux. There's no phone app or web version; you install it once on the computer you do the books on, and it keeps itself up to date.

  1. Download the installer. During the beta, each tester is emailed their own download link. Join the beta to get one.
  2. Install it.
    • Mac: open the disk image (.dmg) and drag Kontuly into your Applications folder. It's signed and notarised by Apple, so it opens normally.
    • Windows: run the installer (.exe) and follow the steps.
    • Linux: the app is an AppImage. Make the file executable, then run it.
  3. Start your trial or enter your key. The first time it opens, Kontuly asks for your name, email and business name to start the free 30-day trial, or click Already bought a licence? Enter your key. Starting the trial needs an internet connection once. See How does the free trial work?
  4. Set up your business. Four short steps create your first set of books. See How do I set up my first business?

Can I look around before setting up my own books?

Yes. On the start screen, click Explore a sample business first. See How do I try Kontuly with a sample business?

Already using Kontuly on another computer?

Click Restore from a backup file… on the start screen instead of setting up a business. See How do I move Kontuly to a new computer?

Does it work on Linux the same way?

Yes, with one difference: running in the background keeps Kontuly in the system tray when its window is closed, but it doesn't start Kontuly when you log in.
