Why can't I change a tax rate's percentage in Kontuly?

Applies to Kontuly 0.2 beta Updated

Kontuly says "… is already used, so its percentage can't change — add a new rate instead" because a rate used on any invoice, bill, credit note or bank transaction is locked, so past documents and BAS figures can't silently change. Add a new rate with the new percentage, switch your accounts to it, and archive the old one.

  1. Add the new rate. In Settings, under Tax rates, click Add rate, give it a unique Name, choose Taxed and enter the Rate (%).
  2. Switch your accounts. In the Chart of Accounts, edit each account that used the old rate and change its GST code.
  3. Archive the old rate. Click its archive icon in Tax rates. It disappears from new entries but stays on existing documents.

Why won't the old rate archive?

  • It's one of the four built-in rates (GST 10%, GST Free, Input Taxed, No GST). Rename it instead.
  • It's still the default of an active account. Change that account's GST code first.

What can I still change?

You can rename any rate at any time. A taxed rate's percentage can change only while it's unused. A rate's kind (Taxed, Zero rated / free, Exempt) can't change after it's created.

Bank rules and drafts

Check any bank rule that sets its own Tax rate. Draft invoices keep the rate on each line, so change the line's rate before you approve them.
