Why won't my bank reconciliation balance in Kontuly?

Applies to Kontuly 0.2 beta Updated

Kontuly only lets you finish a reconciliation when Difference is exactly zero, because a difference means your books and the bank disagree somewhere. Don't force it: check what you typed, compare the ticked entries with the statement line by line, then look for missing or doubled transactions and a wrong opening balance.

  1. Check what you typed. The Statement date and Statement closing balance must be exactly as on the statement. A credit card or overdrawn balance is a negative number.
  2. Compare ticked entries with the statement. Untick anything not on this statement (it'll be on the next one) and tick anything that is. If the difference equals one transaction, this is usually it.
  3. Look for missing transactions. Only entries in your books are listed. A statement line that's not imported, or still unassigned or ignored in Banking, won't appear. Deal with it there and come back.
  4. Look for duplicates. The same payment recorded twice, such as a payment recorded by hand on a bill and the bank line also coded to an expense, shows as two entries. Remove the extra one.
  5. Look for a wrong amount. A typing mistake or misread PDF line. Unassign it in Banking, correct it and code it again.
  6. Check the opening balance. Opening is the closing balance of your previous reconciliation. If it doesn't match the opening balance on this statement, the previous reconciliation was wrong: undo it and redo it.

What does "Not balanced — the statement differs from the ticked entries by …" mean?

You clicked Finish reconciliation with a difference that isn't zero. Work through the checks above.

"The statement date must be on or after the last reconciliation"

Reconciliations go forward in date order. To change an earlier one, undo reconciliations from the latest back; only the latest can be undone at a time.

My first reconciliation is out by the opening balance

Kontuly starts the first reconciliation from zero. Enter the account's opening balance in the books, for example with a manual journal dated before your first transaction, and start from your earliest statement. See How do I post a manual journal?
